  1. H II region: A region consisting
  2. primarily of ionized hydrogen gas.
  3. Ordinarily, a stable hydrogen atom is
  4. composed of one proton surrounded
  5. by an electron, but in an H II region
  6. the protons and electrons of the
  7. hydrogen atoms are separated. This
  8. separation produces the colorful light
  9. emission from these regions.
